On the Flint River some 60 miles northwest of Detroit, Flint garnered a world-wide spotlight with release of filmmaker Michael Moore's Roger and Me, depicting hardscrabble effects of the 1970s U.S. auto industry collapse. No matter how difficult the economy ever since, Flint has somehow survived and its populace of just under 125,000 supports any number of restaurants from chains like Applebee's, Boston Market and Outback to burger and beer sports bars and places known for lip-smacking ribs like Mr. Brown's. While the auto industry continues to dominate the city's landscape and culture, one thing is for sure: Flint takes barbeque quite seriously. Hence the annual BBQ Battle at the Market, usually in August, at the Flint Farmers Market. Competition is hot among restaurants forking out an entry fee to show off their own tastes in barbecued chicken and / or ribs. For a small fee, people attending can sample, and proceeds go to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. Besides barbeque, Flint also is big on Asian-style buffets and fast-food locations for burgers and fried chicken.
